Mrs. President (Mary Becoming)

Mary Lincoln’s life is captured through the lens of Mathew Brady’s camera whose images helped shape America’s national identity. In sitting for him, she travels through time collecting all the advice and admonitions forced on her by family and society. She encounters Dred Scott and Justice Taney; Huckleberry Finn and Jim who open a larger canvas of being black in white America. Her identity as wife and mother disintegrates with the assassination of her husband and the death of her children. Her feelings forced her to explore who she really is (Mary becoming) and what it means to be fully human.
